The Last Porridge

I love breakfast. I have total confidence in those experts* who tell us that it is the
most important meal of the day.

Unless I'm staying somewhere or travelling, I am very unadventuruous about what I eat for breakfast.
In spring, summer and autumn it is always natural, untoasted muesli with fat-free yoghurt,
and fresh blueberries when they come into season.
In winter it is always porridge, with (frozen) blueberries and yoghurt - warming, filling and satisfying.

The time comes, towards the end of August, when I begin to feel that I've had
enough porridge to last me until next winter.
It is a substantial dish, and it takes longer to prepare,
microwave notwithstanding.

This week I decided not to buy a new packet of porridge oats,
and instead put muesli on the shopping list.

So, this is the last porridge of the season - I guess it's the beginning of saying goodbye to winter!

What foods delineate the seasons for you?

* Without 'experts', how would we know what to eat, wear, drive, think, how to live??

  1. It is fruit that delineates my seasons. The berries and the stone fruits in summer and apples in the cooler months. And the first floury apple I eat puts apples on my no go list for the year. Not rational - I could move to a different type of apple, but year after year I reject apples after on dud.

    1. Yes - the first strawberries really mean the coming of spring, for me. And the first asparagus - yum! I don't buy imported fruit and vegetables out of season, except for things we can't grow here, like bananas.
Like, you, I can only eat an apple if it's crisp. Thank you for commenting, EC.

  2. I don't like to have too much for breakfast...generally I have a banana and coffee. However, if someone has made eggs and bacon, it's too delicious to pass up!

  3. breakfast may be the most important meal of the day (according to the 'experts'), but i rarely eat it...and if i do, it's usually more at the time of lunch. i can't seem to eat right after i wake...

summer= cool food, like fruits, yogurt, sandwiches...
winter= chili, split pea soup...anything hot & spicy!

as for the experts...who are expert on SO many things...(and DO change their mind!), i tend to not listen very carefully to what they say...i just do what feels right for me! =) have a nice rest of your weekend Alexia!

    2. Thanks Laura - I couldn't survive until lunchtime, which is usually around 1.30 for me. But perhaps I just fuel up at 6.30 am out of habit...

  4. It's nice to see your shadow, it makes the breakfast eating complete! I'm funny when it comes to food, and only follow my rules! Ha! Ha! In Minnesota many frown on preparing a beef roast complete with roasted potatoes and carrots, unless it's autumn or winter! I'm a huge fan of oatmeal, or cream of wheat (like grits with sugar!) oh yummy, all year long! Things like cucumbers and water-melon all year long too. My tummy is the one that rules, as the seasons come and go! I bet you're getting excited for your spring to arrive!

    1. I most certainly am, Karen. It's getting lighter in the mornings, yay! But we have had SO MUCH RAIN you would not believe it. I should be building an Ark, not a house!

  5. Is porridge the same thing as oatmeal? In the winter, I love oatmeal for breakfast, with berries, just like you! In summer, it's granola.

    1. Yes it is, Galen! and I think your granola is similar to muesli :)

  6. My family is a huge fan of porridge or oats as we call it. It is always part of the grocery list.

It is rainy season now in my part of the world and it is most enjoyable to eat are dishes with soup served hot :-)

I would love to get to know you better through your future posts. Would you like us to follow each other?

  7. P.S. Alexia, re: golf in the rain: It rained on us Thursday (I have a grey pic), but we were clear and free on Friday. I don't prefer to have rain, and lightning is obviously a bit much...but you take what nature throws at you when you're playing outdoors.

  8. Strange to hear August referred to as the end of winter. It is still full summer in my part of the world.
