Thematic Photographic 214: Grounded

Thematic's theme this week is "Grounded". When Carmi's brief said the photos had to include some ground, my thoughts went straight to the region of Cappadocia, in central Turkey.
Here, people still actually live in houses in the ground and hills, as they have for centuries.

I was lucky enough to go there in 2010, and have always meant to do a post about it.
It is one of the most interesting and spectacular places I have ever been to.

Houses, churches "shops" are all built into the ground, mostly on hillsides but also in valleys:

This was the entrance to a public toilet:

It is a very popular tourist attraction, but it isn't spoilt;
the feeling is one of fascinating strangeness,
and there weren't many people around when we were there:

I would love to go back, and do the balloon trip I (stupidly) didn't
 go on when I had the chance...

  1. Alexia, what a very peaceful and enchanting place. I think having saved that balloon trip for another visit, may get you back there sooner. Good thinking :) this is a completely grounded place and just perfect in grounding our spirit as well.

  3. I just brought my skinny portion down to see these photos. He loved Cappadocia, and I think would go back in a heart beat. Perhaps when the next series of operations are over he will get his wish.
    Thank you so much.

  4. I did not know people lived in them. My stepdaughter visited Turkey and talked about them, but I had gotten the impression they were "relics" (for lack of a better word, early in the morning). That is exciting, and what fun it would be to live in such surreal surroundings. :)

    1. They were certainly surreal, lailani - and early on a clear spring morning, they were simply magical.

  10. OH WOW!!!! that is amazing!!! i can surely see how this came to mind when you read 'grounded'.

    beautiful!! fantasy/science fiction-y. like right out of 'the hobbit'!! or the landscape of another planet...the rock looks smooth, weather-worn. each shot is just so amazing.

    i would LOVE to go there...and wander! awesome pictures Alexia!!!!! oh, also, it was good for you that it wasn't crowded when you were there. nice to be able to wander at your own pace.
