This week's theme over at Carmi's blog gives me a chance to post some of the shots
I took on a Sunday walk in August (late winter here).
The day was fine and sunny but the light was hard and wintry. I visited the old
goldmine battery in the Karangahake Gorge.
There are walkways and bike tracks, the skeletons of the old buildings, and rusty old machinery lying everywhere. It is really interesting to walk around the site and look at all of the metal pipes, machines and bits and pieces those old miners left behind.
Here are my heavy metal pics:
Finally a photo of the metal footbridge by which you can enter the park:

This brings back memories. My father was an amateur gemnologist and we spent (in my youthful view) far too many holidays at places just like this, or camped beside slag heaps. The beauty you have portrayed here escaped me completely at the time. Thank you for giving me the rose coloured glasses with which to re-examine my past.
ReplyDeleteI especially like that doorway to nowhere and the bridge shot, although your composition is really nice on all of them.
ReplyDeleteWhat struck me about your shots was how neat and tidy the site appeared to be. Some very interesting indutrial artifacts.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting industrial archaeology there! And they may be rusty, but they are tidy, like Bob said. But that ?screw thingy looked really dangerous! Hopefully it didn't actually move!
ReplyDeleteOh "take me to your leader' down that long an narrow bridge! May I say again how lovely your late winters are?! What a gold mine of metal these photos are, and thank-goodness Carmi picked metal as our theme, or I wouldn't have gotten to see this all too, with a cup of coffee and no jacket! Nicely done Alexia!
ReplyDeletei love these pictures!! there's just something about old metal...rusting & pockmarked...heavy, solid...machinery.
ReplyDeletea couple of years ago we spent a day or two wandering around the (old, closed down) Sloss Furnaces in alabama! it was overwhelming...fantastic...all the old metal smokestacks, walkways, ovens, gears...
thanks for bringing back the memories...while Metallica plays in my head...
Fantastic pictures of metal, I love pictures of old machinery and stuff like these. And that foot bridge at the end is awesome.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your pictures! And I LOVE rusty old things! Very nice :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad the link worked! I wouldn't want to miss these great photos of history! And that bridge is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks heaps for your visits, everyone. Your comments are so welcome, and really interesting to read. I didn't think I would enjoy this theme so much - but I have loved seeing all of your great takes on it! Yay for Carmi :)
ReplyDelete[Happy sigh]
ReplyDeleteIf only that equipment could talk. It's like going back in time to an era so completely removed from anything we've ever experienced. I closed my eyes and tried to imagine what all of this would have looked like when it was functional and vital.
What a powerful choice for this theme!
You’ve captured some beauties here. I have to say the bridge shot is my favourite though.
ReplyDeleteLove the metal foot bridge and all the rusty metal objects! Cool photos and tour.
ReplyDeleteI bet those big pieces of machinery could tell some tales. Very thought provoking.
